American Pest Control is proud to celebrate its 75th anniversary, getting ever closer to a full century of protecting homes, businesses, and communities across the region. What began in 1951 as a small, family-run operation has grown into one of Central Illinois’ most trusted names in pest management. American has been built on dedication, craftsmanship, and generations of customer loyalty.
From Farmhouse Beginnings
The company’s origin dates back even earlier, to 1943, when founder Ira Haggerty began his career at Arwell Pest Control. His passion for solving pest challenges and improving public health inspired him to launch American Pest Control in April 1951 alongside his wife, Lael.

In those early years, business was managed from the family farmhouse, while the barn served as a workshop and warehouse for building bait stations. It was a true family enterprise: daughter Lael was named President, Ira served as Secretary/Treasurer, son Phillip became Director, and teenage sons Chuck and Jim joined as technicians.
By 1961, Chuck and Jim officially became business partners helping fuel steady, organic growth driven not by advertising, but by word of mouth from loyal customers who valued dependable, high-quality service.
A Legacy Built Across Generations
Over the decades, American Pest Control’s leadership and values have passed from one generation to the next. General Manager Doug Hillman, now in his 32nd year with the company, has witnessed firsthand the transformation and evolution of the business.
“From techs to supervisors to office staff, our employees stay – and that must mean we’re doing something right,” Hillman said. “Our strength is in our unity, our partnerships, and our teammates who consistently go above and beyond for our customers.”
Doug’s wife, Lynette Hillman, a third-generation member of the Haggerty family, dedicated 30 years to the business before retiring, helping steer decades of growth while preserving the company’s hallmark family atmosphere.
A Strong Partnership, A Stronger Future
The company’s partnership with OPC has brought expanded employee benefits, strengthened operations, and enabled major investments – including 32 new vehicles, bringing the fleet total to 65. Despite the expansion, American Pest Control has proudly maintained the close-knit, community-minded culture that has defined it for 75 years.
Longtime Administrative Manager Susan Van Houten, who has been part of the team for 26 years, says the anniversary reflects more than longevity. “It’s a testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence that have defined the company from the beginning,” she shared.
Celebrating 75 Years Together
The team will be celebrating this momentous occasion all year long, too. They will have special offers, community events, teammates parties, and even some swag featuring a 75th anniversary logo. The year-long celebration is designed to honor both the employees who helped shape the company and the customers who have trusted them for generations.
A Heartfelt Thank You
American Pest Control extends its deepest gratitude to the loyal customers, dedicated employees, and Central Illinois communities that have supported the company for 75 years. Here’s to the next chapter and the next 75 years of service, protection, and partnership.
